It's one of those great and influential albums that slips under the radar because few copies seemed to have left Japan. Also one of those albums that could use a reissue and/or a bandcamp/web label re-release. -ZMAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8679256753829822948.post-29584974836330562232016-11-29T19:08:41.072+01:002016-11-29T19:08:41.072+01:00An acquaintance of mine actually almost had a hear...An acquaintance of mine actually almost had a heart attack at a Framtid actually. Otherwise a lot of the textures are lost indeed. I get what you mean about the catchy songwriting, I do think it is a crucial point when doing the noisy punk thing and something a lot of bands tend to forget. Apparently, Gloom wrote their songs without distortion or fuzz or any effects and focused first on the riffs, the beats and so on. And it does show on this record. Great, great songwriting for the genre.

If you feel like sending a rip of "Fuck the system" this way, please do ;)The Earslaughterershttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02212895653381929613noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8679256753829822948.post-27167569948056882152016-11-27T06:10:23.622+01:002016-11-27T06:10:23.622+01:00Also, LOVE the Anti Cimex quote that occurs at 0:5...Also, LOVE the Anti Cimex quote that occurs at 0:50 of "Escape From Reality." I will admit that I heard...Thanks so much for this. I will admit that I heard Gloom in the early 2000s, and did not get it at all (yes, I'm American). I didn't care for Atrocious Madness either. But the thing is, I LOVED noisy bands like Confuse. I think there were two factors. First, I was not quite ready for the idea that the noise/sound/texture should take primacy over catchiness/hooks (I liked Disclose at the time, but was not yet a fanatic as I am today...their appropriation of the Discharge songwriting template was more palatable to me even if they weren't as catchy as Discharge). Second, and this is extremely important, I was listening to an incredibly shitty MP3 rip. It was muddy as hell, all midrange with no treble or bass to speak of. Production wise, I was expecting a treble attack to assault my senses, but this garbage rip completely stripped the recording of all its power...which is a problem if the production and the very sound of the record is in fact the most important part of the recording.

So anyway. I finally heard a good rip a few years ago that blew my fucking mind. I heard the record for the insane maelstrom that it is, and I have not been the same since.

I trust that your rip will be quality as well, and I can't wait to download it and compare.

Thanks for the info on Gloom. I had no idea about the lineup changes, not having owned any of the actual records.

P.S. I am currently wrapping up a vacation in Japan, and their record stores are truly stunning. I picked up a mess of CDs (my preferred format and I don't give a shit how unfashionable they are). One of my finds was the Fuck the System comp with some Gloom tracks from 1991. Also, I saw Framtid play live in Osaka and it was one of the most intense experiences of my life...ABhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04876250624394569331noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8679256753829822948.post-47522860738661641672016-11-23T21:20:37.703+01:002016-11-23T21:20:37.703+01:00Thanks. Yes from I have been told, Gloom (and on the whole Crust War records) were not exactly met with enthusiasm in the States at first but I suppose you know far more about it than I do. It probably took Atrocious Madness for people to really notice?

Unfortunately, I have absolutely no clue about the leaf either... I did give it some thought but nothing came out, so if there is deeper meaning, I am missing it. If you are interested, I had an interesting exchange with Thomas (General Speech) about it on facebook, and he is clearly very knowledgable about Gloom. He offered great insight about the sentence on the backcover though he didn't mention the green leaf (you can read the exchange here https://www.facebook.com/romaincrustcave/posts/334579696919038?notif_t=feedback_reaction_generic&notif_id=1479846580430081 you should be able to read it, it is public). Caused me to think...Great, fun entry to your blog. Caused me to think about Gloom in a different way. The Doom and Gloom perception is interesting. Regardless, it is fun and insightful, but I'm also that curious cat who wants someone from Gloom to catch wind of it and validate it or not. And same for your achrony theory. Love that. My first exposure to Gloom was Crust and Anguished Life or MRR's Neil Nordstrom's column and review. Speed Noise made his top 10 for that month. I can't recall which came first, but they both occurred within a short period of each other. You couldn't find it or any Crust War in the States. It was very frustrating. I looked for that 7" for so long that I eventually stopped thinking about it...until I ran into it at a Profane Existence review copy sale. It's the kind of irritation that taints a person. When Recommendation came out, I met it with zero enthusiasm. It took me a while to get pulled in by its great gravity. One of the things that always baffled me was the green clover thing on the back cover. First of all, why? And then from a label/business perspective, I thought of the Yumikes conversation I assumed must have happened because it would take the cover from black/white printing to 4-color printing, which is a much greater expense. I still find that green blob to be perplexing. As much as anything Gloom, I want to understand that. Is there an obvious explanation that I'm missing? -ZMAnonymousnoreply@blogger.com
